Why am I doing Ironman Canada?

I know I told a lot of people I would not do another ironman, especially after losing Jayk. After deep considerations, I decided that I want to dedicate the training/racing year to Jayk, Kona and all dogs.

I started doing triathlon in 2001 as part of Team in Training. From this experience, I quickly learned the power of using sport as a tool to raise awareness and funds for different charities. Every year since I have been in the sport of triathlon, I have done some form of charity fundraising. I have raised money, or promoted, for Multiple Cancer Research, Military Veterans, Heart Disease, Schools, Disasters, ALS, Dog Shelter, MS, Autism and Churches. Most of the charities I have helped, I don’t even have a personal connection to. I just wanted to help make a small difference in life.

This time, unfortunately, I have a connection. This will be my year to focus my efforts on Canine Cancer Research. In July, I lost Jayk, my dog and best friend to Melanoma Cancer. I will be working with Jayk’s Oncologist to find a worthy non-profit to raise funds for. As an animal lover and athlete, it is my duty. Ironman Canada gives me the best platform to reach my goals.

Some folks may read this and find it foolish to raise awareness and fund for Canine Cancer Research. Please remember this, if scientists/doctors find a cure for canine cancer, scientists/doctors have probably found a cure for human cancer.

Another reason: In 1997 my father has his first heart attack, he was 41. In August 2011, I will be 3 months shy of turning 41.
