Hello Mr. Elliptical

There are more than three disciplines in the sport of triathlon. Today I went to the gym to do some mental training and I know what your thinking and you are wrong. It was not time spent checking out all the hotties walking bye.

I spend 60 minutes with the elliptical trainer and my headphones. I figured if 60 minutes on the elliptical doesn’t bore the crap out of me nothing would, so I went at it. It was as boring as I could remember; it has been a while since I last used one. I prefer doing real time training outdoors but I guess I wanted a low impact and boring session today. After about 15 minutes I really wanted to jump off and do something else but I stuck to the plan and accomplished my 60 minutes. I added 20 minutes of stretch time and 15 minutes of core training.

Back in 2006, while training for Ironman Wisconsin, I used the elliptical a lot. I used to go to the gym at 5:00am on Sunday, set up three bottles, gels and elliptical for 2-3 hours. The people who worked at the gym would make sure nobody bothered me, as they all knew why I was doing this. Oh yeah, this occurred every other Sunday. I was trying to save my knees and shins for the big day in Madison, the host city for IMWI. I never made to the run portion of that race. Mark that one as a learning experience and a day that was not meant to be.

After returning home from the gym I had a nice chat with Professional Triathlete Eduardo Sturla of Argentina. I am writing a story about his training. Trust me it is a great story plus it is good to learn how other athletes train around the world. Here in the US we take for granted all the places we have to train.
