My Wildflower Experience: Day 1

Three days at the largest triathlon festival in the world just totally rocks. My Wildflower experience was simply amazing.

Day 1:

The Finishline-Multisport.Com/TriTipTv Crew arrived early Friday morning. We set up camp and then headed over to the Tri California staging area aka Tri Cal Central. There we checked in and received our media badges. Our group sat down for a quick breakfast; breakfast was a true treat. We sat with Rutger Beke, Phil Grave, Desiree Ficker, Tracy Robertson and Eneko Llanos. These are some of triathlons biggest stars.

After breakfast we set out to start our pro interview endeavor. First on our list was the talented and ever so kindhearted Linsey Corbin. We met her and her husband Chris in Kona last year, they are good peeps. We conducted our interview with the Xterra Wetsuit athlete down on the swim dock; over looking the Wildflower swim course. You will be seeing this interview after it is edited. “Coming Soon”

On our way down to the swim dock we bumped into Sam McGlone. Sam is one of the world’s best female triathletes. The more I get to know her the more I respect her. McGlone’s history in the sports is solid and proven. Mad respect for Sam as an athlete and a person.

After mulling, taking pictures and photos around the Wildflower venue we went to grab a quick bike ride. I wanted to preview the monster named “Lynch Hill” as I would be riding this thing on Sunday. The preview went well and yes it is a monster. I found out on the way up that my front derailleur was skipping on my. Not a good time to find this out. I was able to ride the hill twice before getting frustrated and headed back to camp.

After a quick nap the crew headed over to the motorcycle meeting. Yep, you got it, I was going to be taking pictures of the course from the back of a motorcycle. This is a sweet gig! I got my assignment and then hung around to sit in on the pro meeting.

Holy Shit! The pro field was stacked for this race. Before the meeting I was able to get a quick interview with Desiree Ficker. Ficker is an amazing runner and a very talented triathlete. It was an honor to interview the girl who took 10th place in the 2009 New York City Marathon.

You may have heard this name before and I guarantee if you follow triathlon you will be hearing again and again; Julie Dibens. We bumped into Dibens as she was headed to the pro meeting. She is so down to earth; every time I talk to Julie I like her more and more. Dibens is one of the best in the sport today; she is dominating and tactically smart.

After the meeting concluded we conducted interviews with two very strong competitors Joe Gambles and Phil Graves. Gambles had a solid break out year in 2009, especially in the 70.3 distance, while Graves won IMUK 2009. I would classify Joe as a complete triathlete; he is fast in all three disciplines.

Graves has been tagged with being a strong cyclist; well I would say that is wrong as well. After watching Phil Graves race, he has shown me that he is very strong in all three areas as well. Once again, you will be seeing these interviews after they are edited. “Coming Soon”

After all the excitement of the first day, I was able to catch up with my Ironman Florida coach Eileen Swanson to talk about the plan for this season. I am very excited to be working with her. The goal has been laid out there, now it’s time to start executing the plan.

Day 2: Coming Soon!
