Timo Bracht & Chrissie Wellington Win in Tempe!

On a day where the weather did not play nice for the athletes, Timo Bracht and Chrissie Wellington didn’t let that bother them. The athletes faced cool temperatures, tough headwinds and rain throughout the day.

Timo Bracht had to make up some time after his swim. Bracht was in 12th place, coming out of the water, with a 51:24 swim time. Holding true to form, the Commerzbank athlete fought his way into first coming into T2. Once on the run, Bracht held a solid pace all day on the 26.2-mile run course, running a 02:48:59 marathon. Timo had his family fly with him from Germany and it paid dividends, as the Bracht family got to witness Timo win and set a new course record with his 08:07:16 performance.

Chrissie Wellington missed out in Kona, as illness forced her not to race. Today, the 3X IM World Champion, showed the world she was healthy and ready to race. Starting the day by coming out of the water in 4th place (51:56), Wellington had some time to make up. Leanda Cave challenged Wellington the longest on the 112-mile windy and wet bike course. Once Chrissie made the pass, she didn’t let up. Riding sub 5-hours (04:47:06) and running under three hours (02:52:55) on the marathon course. Wellington not only took the course record in Tempe but she now owns the Ironman World record with her finishing time of 08:36:13.

Spectators were given a taste of some of the worlds best today in Tempe Arizona. The crowds and age group athletes saw countless record-breaking performance and the heroic comeback of Jordan Rapp. Hats off to Rasmus Henning, Tom Lowe, Jordan Rapp and Joszef Major for rounding out the men’s top five. Congratulations to Linsey Corbin, Leanda Cave, Meredith Kessler and Heather Wurtele as they fought all day to filling the ladies top five places.

I would like to wish Rachel Joyce a speedy recovery. Joyce was in a bike accident during the race.
