Tricks to Staying Warm and Dry while Riding your Bike

If you do not own a rain gear, toe, leg or arm warmers don’t worry. All you need is sandwich bags, garbage bags and/or grocery bags.

1. Plastic sandwich bags make great toe warmers. Slip the sandwich bag over your sock and toe area before sliding your foot into your bike shoes. The plastic is thin enough, that you should not feel it. The plastic will stop the cold wind from getting to your toes.

2. Plastic garbage bags and plastic wrap are big and good for multiple uses. The garbage bag makes a great rain poncho but it can also be used to protect your head, arms, legs and toes from wind and rain. Rip or cut the garbage bag to the size you need to protect desired areas. Placing these pieces under you helmet, shirt, shorts and shoes will, help, keep it from getting caught on moving parts. It will also minimize wind drag, especially during a race.

3. Plastic grocery bags is just as versatile as the garbage bag. These can be used to cover multiple and vital areas on your body. One of the ways best use this bag is to place it over your chest and stomach. Hide the grocery bag under your cycling jersey. This will protect your core from the cold air and/or wind.

If you get caught in the rain while riding, stop at a local store and ask for some plastic bags.

Key Notes:
1. When using plastic, you may sweat more than usual. You may need to increase your hydration intake.
2. Plastic is wind resistant and it does not breathe well, so you will want to monitor your core temperature.
3. If applied to tight the plastic can be restrictive, you may need to pull off to the side of the rode to loosen or remove some of the plastic.
4. Keep the plastic under clothing to keep the plastic from getting caught in moving parts.

Have fun but be safe and be smart while riding on the open road.
